Consideration for Future Stimulation Options Is Vital in Deciding Horizontal Well Drilling and Completion Schemes for Production Optimization

Abstract: Summary Many horizontal wells have been completed without plans for stimulation. Often, horizontal wells were not planned for stimulation, because the belief at the time of completion was that horizontal wellbores eliminate the need for hydraulic fracturing stimulation. This presumption has turned out to be false. Often, by the time it is discovered that a horizontal well needs to be stimulated, it cannot be stimulated effectively because of mechanical or reservoir limitations. This regrettab… Show more

“…This is significantly greater than effective wellbore diameters achievable with regular perforations (about 8 in length, generating 16 in effective wellbore diameter) 36 . fracturing could be used to create the transversal fractures, adding vertical jetted holes to eliminate or to reduce flow constriction in the wellbore connection.…”

“…For the first time, completion methods became an important and critical variable in the stimulation plan (Surjaatmadja et al, 2008). The "drill it first and find out later" attitude, often adopted when completing vertical wells, became a thing of the past when dealing with horizontals.…”
