“…The term ureteral polyp is loosely applied in both gross pathological and histological descriptions. Fibrous or fibro-epithelial polyps as a distinct benign group would seem to be characterised by a vascular, fibrous stroma covered by apparently normal transitional cell epithelium (Vest, 1945). Attempts at further classifying or subdividing these tumours depending on predominant histological structures have only added to the confusion.…”

“…They ernphasise the inability to reach an unequjvocal pre-operative diagnosis of benignity and the hazard of spilling malignant cells during biopsy. Local excision with partial resection of the ureteric wall is recommended by others (Vest, 1945;Abeshouse, 1956;Arduino, 1961 ;Breckenridge et al, 1963;Robards et al, 1964;Bergman, 1967). It is our opinion that conservative operative approach is indicated when there is sufficient evidence to suggest that the tumour is benign pre-operatively.…”

“…If necessary, in cases of invasion of deeper ureteral layers or a recurrence of a tumor with a low degree of differentia tion, the radical operation can be repeated. With the reservations and criticism made necessary by the small number of cases, we believe that with the help of laser irradiation of ureteral tumors we have come a step closer to the goal of organ-preserving treatment [17].…”

“…Solitary kidneys (functional or anatomical), bilateral synchronous tumours and renal insufficiency not infrequently preclude a nephrectomy. Several authors have shown long recurrence‐free periods or cure with conservative surgery [ 4–8]. Evidence against adopting this approach in the presence of a normal contralateral kidney includes the multifocality of ipsilateral tumours in up to a third of patients [ 9] compared with the low incidence of contralateral tumours, and a high incidence of ureteric stump recurrences.…”
