Conservative management of sacroiliac luxation fracture in cats: medium- to long-term functional outcome

Abstract: Objectives The aim of this study was to determine the functional medium- to long-term outcome for cats with a conservatively managed sacroiliac luxation fracture (SILF). Methods Inclusion criteria were conservative management of SILF in cats with no other concurrent fractures of the pelvic weightbearing axis and availability of radiographs for review. Radiographic measurements of percentage displacement of the sacroiliac joint and the sacral index were obtained and fracture configuration was assessed. A specif… Show more

“…1,4,6 Bilateral sacroiliac luxation may occur without other concurrent pelvic injuries, resulting in cranial displacement of the otherwise intact pelvis. 1,6 Treatment options for sacroiliac luxation include conservative management 7 or surgical repair. Surgical repair of sacroiliac luxation restores anatomical alignment and force transmission through the joint, leading to early ambulation.…”

“…This study measured the total length of the articular surface of the sacrum and compared it to the length that was incongruent with the SI joint. 7 While current protocols for the diagnosis of SI subluxation/luxation may be adequate for veterinarians familiar with the normal appearance of the pelvis on radiographs, it still relies on a subjective evaluation. The attempt to develop a more objective diagnostic tool to help improve diagnostic accuracy is supported by advances in technology that allow most current commercial DICOM viewers to measure angles.…”

“…Only one published study in feline patients has quantified SI subluxation/luxation objectively by measurement of the percentage of joint displacement. This study measured the total length of the articular surface of the sacrum and compared it to the length that was incongruent with the SI joint 7 . While current protocols for the diagnosis of SI subluxation/luxation may be adequate for veterinarians familiar with the normal appearance of the pelvis on radiographs, it still relies on a subjective evaluation.…”
