Conservative Management of Median Nerve Brachial Plexopathy after Microwave-based MiraDry Treatment for Axillary Hyperhidrosis

Abstract: Summary: Axillary hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweating of the armpits, which can significantly affect quality of life. A new microwave-based therapy, MiraDry (Miramar labs, Sunnyvale, Calif.), is a promising minimally-invasive treatment option. We report a case of unilateral brachial plexus thermal injury in a thin 19-year-old man treated for axillary hyperhidrosis with the MiraDry system. He initially experienced swelling and pain in the left hand and was prescribed 1 week of methyl… Show more

“…In these case reports, the extent of nerve injury varies; while some of the reported patients recovered, others did not, despite rehabilitation. [10][11][12][13][14] A previously published ultrasound-guided pretreatment assessment identified a "danger zone" as an area with a deep fascia depth of less than 5 mm because the microwave-based device's thermal impact may traverse the deep fascia and induce nerve injury in this location. 15 However, realworld data are lacking.…”
