BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:The greater trochanteric pain syndrome is a painful condition that involves changes in the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus, which can interfere with the performance of functional tasks. The study aimed to analyze the conservative treatment strategies for pain management, the instruments, and provocative tests used in the evaluation of this syndrome. CONTENTS: A systematic search for articles published in indexed journals in the Medline, Scielo, PEDro, Cochrane Library, VHL Regional Portal, ScienceDirect database was conducted, using AND and OR Boolean operators for the primary "Gluteal tendinopathy" crossing with the secondary descriptors "AND conservative treatment; AND rehabilitation; AND physiotherapy; AND management; AND physiotherapy treatment; OR greater trochanteric pain; OR trochanteric syndrome", in English and Portuguese, from 2014 to 2019. The primary outcome aimed to identify the conservative treatment and/or combined for pain management, and the secondary outcome aimed to outline the instruments and tests to assess the greater trochanteric pain syndrome. CONCLUSION: Given the lack of studies and the difficulty of consensus among authors, it was not possible to reach conclusions about the efficacy of the protocols.

Objetivo: Estabelecer a capacidade física e alterações do controle postural (COP) durante o apoio unipodal estático e dinâmico em mulheres com Síndrome de Dor no Grande Trocânter (SDGT). Métodos: Foram avaliadas 36 mulheres, sedentárias, maiores de 45 anos. Destas, 18 tinham diagnóstico de SDGT (Grupo Dor - GD) e 18 sem queixas álgicas (Grupo Controle - GC). Todas responderam ao questionário Victorian Institute of Sports Assessment for Gluteal Tendinopathy (VISA-G) para análise da capacidade física relacionada a dor lateral do quadril, e foram submetidas à avaliação do controle postural na plataforma de força, em apoio unipodal estático e dinâmico (mini agachamentos). Os dados foram comparados e correlacionados, com significância estatística estabelecida 5%. Resultados: As participantes do GD apresentaram alto índice de dor (7), por 10 meses e baixa capacidade funcional (54,44 pontos no VISA-G). Na análise do controle postural estático, GD mostrou piores resultados para a área de oscilação do COP (p= 0,04) e maior amplitude de oscilação médio-lateral (p= 0,03). Na avaliação dinâmica, os resultados da amplitude médio-lateral (p= 0,02) e velocidade antero posterior (p= 0,04) foram maiores no GD, mas o COP foi pior no GC (p= 0,01). Conclusão: Mulheres com SDGT tem baixa capacidade funcional e pior controle postural estático e dinâmico. Estas variáveis devem ser avaliadas para estabelecer novas estratégias de prevenção e reabilitação em mulheres com SDGT.

Patient-reported care for the greater trochanteric pain syndrome The greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) is a condition that mostly affects middle-aged women. At the University Hospitals Leuven (Belgium), many patients consult a physician for this problem. This retrospective cohort study evaluated the technical investigations and treatment options women with GTPS went through before presenting to a university hospital. Despite the fact that GTPS is described as a clinical diagnosis, most patients already underwent technical investigations. In literature, an MRI of the pelvis is often considered the gold standard for the differential diagnosis, but only a minority already got one. The most performed technical investigation was a hip radiography, followed by an ultrasound of the hip. Less than half of the patient population reported they already had physiotherapy with an active exercise program. About 25% received a corticosteroid injection. Both the proposed diagnostic examinations and treatment options for GTPS seem to differentiate among caregivers. This type of descriptive study makes them reflect critically about the care provided.
