Conservative Extension in Positive/Negative Conditional Term Rewriting with Applications to Software Renovation Factories

Abstract: Abstract. We transpose a conservative extension theorem from structural operational semantics to conditional term rewriting. The result is useful for the development of software renovation factories, and for modular specification of abstract data types.

“…This notion is not only useful in the realm of operational conservativity, but also in conservativity of rewrite systems. For example, Fokkink and Verhoef [31] give a treatment of sourcedependency for term rewriting systems with applications to software renovation. Roughly, a component that rewrites legacy code into better code, can also extend it with more functionality.…”

“…We start by defining the notion of a source-dependent variable 25,30 , which will be an important ingredient of a rule format to ensure that an extension of a TSS is operationally conservative. In order to conclude that an extended TSS is operationally conservative over the original TSS, we need to know that the variables in the original transition rules are source-dependent.…”

“…Fundamentals for software renovation factories and system renovation are laid out in [10,56,69], and prerequisites for analysis and conversion tools for large software systems are discussed in [11]. A quick introduction into software renovation in given in [28], and definitions of a software renovation factory are given in [35,38], as well as in [33]: a software renovation factory is a set of software renovation assembly lines, while a software renovation assembly line is an ordered set of (renovation) automated functions.…”
