Conservation of Isospin in Neutron-rich Fission Fragments

Abstract: On the occasion of the 75 th anniversary of the fission phenomenon, we present a surprisingly simple result which highlights the important role of isospin and its conservation in neutron rich fission fragments. We have analysed the fission fragment mass distribution from two recent heavyion reactions 238 U( 18 O,f) and 208 Pb( 18 O,f) as well as a thermal neutron fission reaction 245 Cm(n th ,f). We find that the conservation of the total isospin explains the overall trend in the observed relative yields of fr… Show more

“…The extra neutrons dilute the isospin impurity and isospin again becomes a nearly good quantum number in neutron-rich nuclei. We have used this concept of isospin conservation in reproducing the yields of neutron-rich fragments [4,5].…”

“…Hence, the neutron rich nuclei produced through spontaneous fissions, heavy-ion induced fusion-fission and other induced-fission reactions should provide the necessary ground for testing the purity of isospin. Jain et al [40] proposed the aforesaid idea, and developed the necessary formalism based on Kelson's arguments [41], for assigning the specific isospin to neutron-rich fragment nuclei produced in a fission process. Subsequent calculations for the relative yields of the fission fragments were carried out based on the assigned isospin and related algebra.…”

“…Lane and Soper [2] also showed in a theoretical calculation that isospin indeed remains quite good in heavy mass neutron rich systems. In this paper, we present isospin based calculations [3,4] for the fission fragment distributions obtained from heavy-ion fusion fission reactions. We discuss in detail the procedure adopted to assign the isospin values and the role of neutron multiplicity data in obtaining the total fission fragment distributions.…”
