Ornamental fish culture, also known as aquariculture, is a significant industry globally, contributing to foreign exchange earnings and employment generation. India, particularly the northeastern region, is endowed with diverse indigenous ornamental fish species. However, the ornamental fish trade in India remains relatively underdeveloped. This study aimed to document the ornamental fish diversity in Khambrenga Beel, a freshwater wetland located near Guwahati City, Assam, India. From December 2022 to April 2023, fish samples were collected and photographed in the study area. Local knowledge and identification literature were utilized to identify the fish species, while the IUCN Red List was referenced to determine their conservation status. A total of 48 species belonging to 30 genera, 20 families, and 10 orders of ornamental fishes were recorded in Khambrenga Beel. The Cypriniformes and Perciformes orders were the most diverse, comprising 16 species each. The majority of the recorded species were categorized as least concern (LRlc), indicating a relatively stable conservation status. However, three species were categorized as near threatened (NT), one species as vulnerable (VU), and one species as endangered (EN). The abundance of ornamental fishes varied across different sampling sites and seasons, reflecting the influence of habitat heterogeneity and seasonal dynamics. The findings highlight the importance of conserving Khambrenga Beel's unique ecosystem and its diverse ornamental fish species. Conservation measures such as habitat protection and sustainable fishing practices are crucial for ensuring the long-term survival of these species. This study provides valuable information for the development of conservation strategies to protect the ornamental fish populations in Khambrenga Beel, thereby contributing to the overall conservation of indigenous ornamental fishes in India.

Striped snakehead (Channa striata) has important economic value in freshwater systems, including Sempor Reservoir in Indonesia, where increases in catch sizes have resulted in a declining population. In this study, we determined its population size based on abundance and distribution of length and assessed the rate of exploitation based on estimated growth and mortality rates to determine a conservation strategy in Sempor Reservoir. The study was undertaken from March to October 2020. The method used was a purposive random sampling survey. Fish samples were taken from five stations with different land uses. The estimated growth, mortality, and exploitation rates were analyzed by Pauly's model using FISAT II. Channa striata abundance data were analyzed using a Kruskal-Wallis test. The results showed that the highest abundance of C. striata at the KW station was almost three times higher than at the BK station. The average size of the gonads at first maturity was 277.4 mm in females and 284 mm in males. The estimated growth parameters indicated an asymptotic length (L?) of 409.5 mm. An exploitation rate of 0.74 was classified as overfishing. The proposed conservation strategy is to limit the number of catches by as much as 44% and prohibit the catching of individuals with a length of 230-349 mm. Kedungwringin Station was defined as a reference area with the largest abundance and complete size distribution, namely, the pre-reproduction, reproduction, and post-reproduction stages. Bangkong Station was defined as a spawning ground because there were many fish in the reproductive stage and Sempor River Station was the nursery ground with mostly juvenile fish. These two sites must be protected for sustainable striped snakehead populations in the river and reservoir.

Este artículo hace una revisión de literatura científica sobre la importancia comercial de los peces ornamentales (PO) en Colombia. Entre los principales resultados se encuentra que este mercado continúa siendo una actividad de intercambio mundial de especies exóticas que genera grandes ganancias y que se ha sostenido con el comercio de más de mil millones de especies cada año. La mayoría de los PO son extraídos de las poblaciones naturales y terminan su destino en acuarios distribuidos en el mundo, lo que genera agotamiento del recurso asociado a la sobrepesca y las actividades de extracción. Las prácticas de captura, manejo y las tasas elevadas de mortalidad representan un importante problema de bienestar, además de un costo económico y ambiental significativo para la industria. Suramérica sigue siendo el mayor proveedor de especies, principalmente los países biodiversos y de tradición exportadora como Colombia, donde es considerado como un recurso comercial o de subsistencia de gran importancia para las poblaciones de pescadores e indígenas. Se confirmó un listado de 522 especies de PO, agrupadas en 13 órdenes, 49 familias y 213 géneros cuyas especies más apetecidas son: Osteoglossum bicirrhosum, Osteoglossum ferreirai, Paracheirodon axelrodi, Pterophyllum altum, Panaque nigrolineatus y Callichthyidae Callichthyidae. Las problemáticas asociadas a los pocos estudios realizados en PO, la limitada legislación que regule y proteja los ecosistemas y su biodiversidad, sumado a las malas prácticas y al incentivo al cultivo, el abandono de las comunidades pesqueras que dependen de este recurso, han limitado el crecimiento del sector. Urge contemplar alternativas sostenibles que disminuyan la presión de pesca sobre las especies, que abarquen aspectos sanitarios, nutricionales y de uso eficiente del recurso agua con el fin de permitir el uso y la conservación de las especies de PO, de esta manera crecería mucho más este comercio y su contribución a la economía del país sería también mayor.
