Consequences of equivalency metric design for energy transitions and climate change

Abstract: Assessments of the climate impacts of energy technologies and other emissions sources can depend strongly on the equivalency metric used to compare short- and long-lived greenhouse gas emissions. However, the consequences of metric design choices are not fully understood, and in practice, a single metric, the global warming potential (GWP), is used almost universally. Many metrics have been proposed and evaluated in recent decades, but questions still remain about which ones perform better and why. Here, we de… Show more

“…Social criteria encompass metrics such as the number of jobs (Atabaki and Aryanpur, 2018) to gauge factors such as employment opportunities, energy security, societal well-being, and policy implications. Environmental criteria are intricately linked to aspects such as CO 2 emissions, temperature control targets, and biodiversity preservation (Edwards and Trancik, 2022). Addressing the trade-offs that arise between numerous criteria becomes essential during the modeling process for reaching decisions within RESs.…”

“…During the past three decades, multiple sources of evidence show that the overuse of fossil fuels is a major factor in unabated global warming [1][2][3]. Wind energy has attracted extensive attention as one of the most promising clean renewable energy alternatives to fossil energy.…”
