“…During 15-min surveys along 30 m (centered within the study reach), we visually inspected the streambank and immediate riparian zone for orb webs, counting the number of webs per m up to 2 m in height and 3 m landward from the streambank (Williams et al, 1995). Using orb webs as a 1:1 proxy for spiders is justified by the habits of tetragnathid spiders, which are known re-build their webs on a daily basis, making it possible to estimate the number of small, reclusive spiders by surveying the number of webs present at night, when these spiders are known to be most active (Williams et al, 1995;Diesburg et al, 2021). At each study reach, we also collected 7-12 tetragnathid spiders from orb webs for stable-isotope analysis (Akamatsu et al, 2004).…”
