Consensus Paper: The Cerebellum's Role in Movement and Cognition

Abstract: While the cerebellum's role in motor function is well recognized, the nature of its concurrent role in cognitive function remains considerably less clear. The current consensus paper gathers diverse views on a variety of important roles played by the cerebellum across a range of cognitive and emotional functions. This paper considers the cerebellum in relation to neurocognitive development, language function, working memory, executive function, and the development of cerebellar internal control models and refl… Show more

“…The cerebellum is involved in body and limb movement, executive and cognitive functions, and language ability (Koziol et al, 2014;Wang et al, 2014). ASD individuals often show motor abnormalities consistent with cerebellar dysfunction that occurs in young children and is persistent over time (Lee and Bo, 2015).…”

“…There are neuronal connections between the cerebellum and other brain regions (Mazzola et al, 2013;Rogers et al, 2013;Koziol et al, 2014). To understand symptoms, initiation, and progression of ASD more precisely, it is important to analyze the neuropathological relation between the cerebellum and other brain regions.…”

“…However, evidence of a wide network of brain dysfunction in the pathophysiology of dystonia that include the cerebellum [18][19][20][21][22], opens up the prospect of applying NBS to these novel targets. Furthermore, emerging evidence that the cerebellum is highly involved in moderating certain aspects of cognition [23,24] suggest that stimulating both motor …”

“…Последние исследования, выполненные с помощью функциональной магнитно-резонансной томографии, демонстрируют активацию мозжечка при выполнении задач на рабочую память [28,29] и исполнительные функции [30]. Они показывают, что улучшение восприятия времени через трениров-ку ритмического чувства приводит к увеличению количества белого вещества и улучшению работы исполнительных функций [31].…”
