“…Because race/ethnicity was treated as a binary variable (i.e., non-Hispanic White or another race/ethnicity) in all analyses to preserve statistical power, this study precludes the analysis of within-group differences among gay men of color and may overshadow anti-Black bias that is prevalent within the United States and across the globe (e.g., colorism in Latin America; Cuevas et al, 2016; Liu et al, 2023), thereby limiting the findings and implications for working with gay men from different racial/ethnic groups. Furthermore, not all possible forms of intraminority stigma were measured, such as community-level denigration based on height, sexual position, human immunodeficiency virus status, disability status, and consensual nonmonogamy (Hammack et al, 2022; Pachankis et al, 2020; Simić Stanojević et al, 2023; Stewart et al, 2021), all of which may intersect with each other to influence gay men’s experiences on dating apps.…”

“…First, given the lack of research in this area, we were unable to use a preexisting, validated measure of CNM-related stigma. To address this gap in the literature, we created a new measure, based on our previous qualitative work (Stults, 2019; Stewart et al, 2021) which does not meet the typical psychometric standards. While we would have preferred to have CFA results that were more consistent with a two-factor model, given the context of this study, we believe that it is a sufficient measure for our purposes.…”

“…The items were developed by the research team, in consultation with experts in the field of consensual nonmonogamy in LGBTQ+ populations, and as part of a professional task force related to consensual nonmonogamy among LGBTQ+ people. The content of the items came, in part, from qualitative data collected during a previous study of CNM relationships among sexual minority men (Stults, 2019; Stewart et al, 2021). Briefly, participants in the study were asked about their experiences of prejudice, discrimination, and mistreatment, as well as their perceptions of stigma related to their CNM relationships and/or their identification with consensual nonmonogamy.…”
