Conodont biofacies of the Triassic of northwestern Nevada

Abstract: Biofacies interpretation of Star Peak and partly equivalent basinal conodonts isbased upon sedimentologically and paleontologically determined lithofacies relationships as well as a regional paleogeographic model. Late Spathian transgression initiated Star Peak sedimentation. Deep shelf conditions represented by the lower member of the Prida Formation supported an abundant neospathodid fauna (Neospathodus homeri and TV. triangularis) succeeded by a neogondolellid fauna (Neogondolella jubata and TV. timorensis)… Show more

“…This interval contains the first open-marine biota to appear in the interior of the GBG since the initiation and low-relief bank stages in the Early Triassic. Included are Neogondolellid conodonts, which are commonly interpreted to indicate a deep-marine biofacies (Kozur 1976;Carey 1984). Deepening conditions are inferred to have ended restricted shallow-subtidal conditions beginning with the occurrence first of wave-agitated conditions resulting in ooid grainstones, which later pass upward to quieter, deeper, open-marine conditions represented by the nodular-bedded skeletal-oncolitic wackestones (Fig.…”

“…Cross lamina suggests that small-scale currents were present in low-energy waters (Flügel, 2004). The neogondolellid conodonts discovered by Katvala and Stanley (2008) in fine-grained, well-bedded rocks suggest a deeper outer slope environment (Carey, 1984;Meek, 1984).…”
