A cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) is the most popular backlight source for an LCD and an important device to determine the color gamut and luminance of the LCD. However, there is a trade-off relationship between expansion of the color gamut and increase in the luminance. In order to balance the wide colorgamut with high luminance, we made two experiments. The first is research of the phosphor combination for the CCFL and the second is improvement of the phosphor efficiency. Research of the phosphor combination enhanced the luminance of the CCFL by 17%. On the other hand, in the study of increasing the phosphor efficiency, focus was laid on the luminance-saturation behavior of a red-emitting phosphor, YVO 4 :Eu 3+ , which was reduced by codoping Tb 3+ .
