“…A comprehensive understanding of the impact of retrospective incidents of CSA on current behaviours, symptoms and risk factors, including the coping strategies individuals adopt, is an important aspect of modern health care. Cleary et al (2018) suggest a failure to understand the impact of the person’s CSA history can lead to a failure to adequately support, refer and work with the current difficulties. MHNs as front‐line healthcare professionals are in a unique position to identify and support the person with the associated challenges of CSA, with the hope of facilitating and improving health outcomes.…”

“…Among alarming epidemiological data between 2011 and 2017, healthcare units in Brazil received an average of 20,000 cases of sexual abuse against children and 25,000 reports through the Human Rights Helpline, which brings an average estimate of 55 abused children and adolescents per day and 2.3 per hour (4) . Nursing is crucial in providing care for child victims of sexual abuse, as they assume a privileged position within the multidisciplinary team, directly interacting with children/adolescents and their families, thereby strengthening the bond between the professional and the user (8) . In a study conducted with nurses, a lack of knowledge about their role and importance within this theme was observed, including recognizing signs and symptoms and the difficulty of understanding the best approach to deal with such situations, thereby impairing the provision of qualified assistance to the child (9) .…”

“…A third model of care is trauma-informed care (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2014). A trauma-informed approach recognises the prevalence of trauma, its presentations and impacts, and the needs of people with lived experience of trauma and focuses on supporting them psychologically while minimising the risk of re-traumatisation (Cleary, West et al, 2018). Consistent with many of the principles discussed in relation to McAllister and Walsh's (2003) CARE framework, trauma-informed care emphasises safety, transparency, trustworthiness, collaboration, choice, empowerment, peer support, mutuality, and inclusiveness (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2014).…”
