“…The difficulty to connect and develop a strong alliance may be exacerbated by unspoken power dynamics involving patients’ well-documented inclination to deny existing suicidal ideation (Blanchard & Farber, 2018; Richards et al, 2019), as well as therapists’ anxiety-driven coercions, which can potentially be perceived by patients as betrayals (Jobes & Ballard, 2011). In contrast, an effective therapeutic alliance may mitigate suicidal thoughts and behaviors (Dunster-Page et al, 2017) by promoting and instilling hope in interpersonal connections (Schechter et al, 2013), which is a protective factor against suicide (Zareian & Klonsky, 2020).
