This paper presents an application model for augmenting TV viewing experience. The augmentation consists of additional media resources, which are linked to the Web according to the user profile and to TV metadata. Instead of asking the user for such data, a distributed software system captures them non-intrusively, processes the user and TV program context, and automatically searches for and delivers the context-aware resources to the viewer either on the TV screen or on a second screen. The use of TV metadata as context data is a remarkable feature in this work. Such metadata are carried in the MPEG-2 Transport Stream, which is part of the major digital TV systems in the world. This work deals with problems such as inconsistency of TV metadata, and ineffectiveness of Web search, which could frustrate the viewer's enriched experience. The research indicates that context-aware applications in the television domain should strongly take into account TV metadata captured opportunistically from broadcast streams, in addition to traditional context data, such as location, temperature, device capabilities, among others. The solutions presented in this paper point to a minimum-effort by the TV user, enabling a more useful, easier and more attractive Integrated TV-Internet viewing experience.

The concept of Viewer usually specifies someone who watches, listens and receives information available on his TV. However, the addition of the ability to run applications and access the Internet into TVs changes this concept, since the content shown in TV receivers are no longer under the total control of the TV stations and a viewer can access and view on the screen of your TV (or on a second screen) extra contents related to the program that they are watching. In fact, each viewer decides how to integrate these multiple contents generating unique and individual experiences. However, as these experiences are based on the access to different content sources, it becomes necessary to synchronize this content locally on each user's reception platform. This paper proposes a generic model to synchronize content from different sources with a TV show on each client, independently of middleware and platform used. The model foresees the generation of sync points from the (main) content of a program, which are sent to customers and used locally to synchronize the different extra content accessed by the viewer with the main content. A proof-of-concept application is presented to evaluate the model. In the application, different audio streams and text related to a TV show are aggregated, reaching a high accuracy when synchronized. INTRODUÇÃOO perfil dos telespectadores da TV mudou há alguns anos e isso forçou que produtores e conteúdos se adaptassem a essa nova situação. O chaveamento de analógico para digital, as diversas tentativas de uso de plataformas interativas, as TVs conectadas, investimentos de grandes nomes como Google e Apple e o uso de múltiplos dispositivos durante a experiência televisiva são exemplos de tal mudança. Como resultado, a forma de prover interação com a TV também está evoluindo.Atualmente, a produção de conteúdo televisivo segue o modelo produce-deliver-consume, no qual uma rede de TV tem controle sobre todo o conteúdo enviado aos receptores sintonizados na frequência do seu canal [1]. Por outro lado, a facilidade de geração e acesso a conteúdos digitais permite que os conteúdos para TV sejam produzidos seguindo um modelo edit-sharecontrol, no qual outros atores, além das radiodifusoras, poderiam participar deste ciclo de produção [1]. Outro ponto a ser observado é que o usuário não mais está limitado a consumir apenas o conteúdo fornecido pelas radiodifusoras na tela da sua TV. Ele também pode acessar conteúdos digitais de outras fontes usando um ou mais dispositivos para compor seu ambiente de apresentação. Estes conteúdos podem variar de objetos de mídia complementares acessados via Web (por exemplo, as estatísticas de uma partida de tênis sendo transmitida no momento) a fluxos de mídia transmitidos em broadcast (por exemplo, ouvir a narração de um jogo de futebol apresentado na TV pelo rádio).Por outro lado, estes conteúdos são provenientes de fontes terceiras que não estão, necessariamente, sob o controle da emissora que transmite o programa de TV. The emergence of Interactive Digital Television (iDTV) opened a set of technological possibilities that go beyond those offered by conventional TV. Among these opportunities we can highlight interactive contents that run together with linear TV program (television service where the viewer has to watch a scheduled TV program at the particular time it is offered and on the particular channel it is presented on). However, developing interactive contents for this new platform is not as straightforward as, for example, developing Internet applications. One of the options to make this development process easier and safer is to use an iDTV simulator. However, after having investigated some of the existing iDTV simulation environments, we have found a limitation: these simulators mainly present solutions focused on the TV receiver, whose interactive content must be loaded in advance by the programmer to a local repository (e.g., Hard Drive, USB). Therefore, in this paper, we propose a tool, named BiS (Broadcast iDTV content Simulator), which makes possible a broader solution for the simulation of interactive contents. It allows simulating the transmission of interactive content along with the linear TV program (simulating the transmission of content over the air and in broadcast to the receivers). To enable this, we defined a generic and easy-to-customize communication protocol that was implemented in the tool. The proposed environment differs from others because it allows simulating reception of both linear content and interactive content while running Java applications to allow such a content presentation.
