Connected-Slot Array With Artificial Dielectrics: A 6 to 15 GHz Dual-Pol Wide-Scan Prototype

Abstract: In this work we report on the design, manufacturing and testing of a dual-polarized array of connected slots radiating in the presence of an artificial dielectric superstrate. The prototype array consists of 512 elements, i.e. 16×16 connected slots for each of the two polarizations. The antenna array is realized with a single multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB), which represents an advantage in terms of cost and complexity with respect to the typical configuration based on multiple vertically arranged PCBs… Show more

“…1) and H-plane at broadside Note that the coaxial transition allows 2D scanning (refer to Section III) and does not require a corporate feed network or quasi-optical system, as in [5]. It is worth mentioning that connected arrays can provide a similar performance [11]- [13].…”

“…A planar wideband array concept with reduced cost and complexity was presented in [13], [14] and consists of connected slot arrays with artificial dielectric layers (ADLs). These are antenna arrays composed of slots that are electrically connected to each other, intentionally increasing mutual coupling to provide wideband operation.…”

“…In arrays, this connected element approach is considered as a suitable solution for wide-band, wide-scan applications [5]. This concept has been used for the dipole [5], Vivaldi [6] and slot [7] antenna elements. In this paper, the concept of connected array is implemented with a dual polarized bowtie element to achieve a relatively low profile (∼ 0.35 λ max ), wide scan (±75 • at E-plane and ±15 • at H-plane) antenna array.…”
