Hospital activity of professionals who use ionizing radiation (IR) at work generates risks on their health. Good knowledge of radiation protection (RP) rules can contribute to minimize these risks. This descriptive and analytical study, carried out from March 25 to May 14, 2019 as a survey, focused on knowledge about IR and RP. It was intended for medical and paramedical staff from several departments of Ibn Rochd UHC in Casablanca. Among 135 surveyed workers, 83% with median age of 31 years (21 to 54 years) participated. 65.17% of participants were physicians whose 76% were in training. 47% of respondents had a high global level of knowledge, with mean score of 6.6/10. IR average score (7.8/10) were better than RP average score (6.23/10). The scores varied significantly according to RP education (p<0.002) and home department (p<0.002). RP score was more strongly correlated to RP education (η2=0.32) than to department membership (η2=0.14). Medical staff RP knowledge are insufficient. In order to improve workers’ knowledge on RP, and thereby protect their health, it would be desirable to set up systematic pre-hire training and continuing education programs as well as integrate a radiation safety officer into all departments operating under IR.

Objectives: To assess the radiation protection of the personnel in radiology departments of South Benin. Materials and method: Cross-sectional descriptive study with a prospective data collections, including in the functional Medical Imaging departments of the South Benin. Imaging services (with functional radiology facilities) of hospitals in southern Benin and workers who may or may not be technically involved in performing radiology examinations were included. Data collection was carried out by carrying out a direct observation of the infrastructures, radiology and radiation protection equipment and by measuring the radiology infrastructures, followed by an interview with the workers. Three survey cards with multiple choice questions were used as the data collection tool. The variables studied were related to workers' knowledge of radiation protection and their observance of rules, radiology infrastructure and equipment, radiation protection measures and workers. The data was then processed, analyzed using Minitab version 17 and EXCEL Office version 2013 software. Chi-square independence tests, Fisher's exact test, and Mann-Whitney test were also used. The significance level was ≤ 5%. Results: Have been collected 35 radiology departments, 45 examination rooms, 52 radiology machines and 112 workers was carried out from June to December 2019. The average age of the workers with 56.25% of whom were men, was 32.53 ± 0.82 years. At least 10 years professional experience was noted in 11.6% of workers. The area of 09 rooms (20%) was insufficient and 09 doors (20%) were not leaded. Six X-ray machines (14.6%) had been used for more than 10 years. Calibration had only been performed prior to installation for 03 (5.77%) X-ray machines. There was an absence of medical follow-up for workers in all departments. Dosimetric monitoring was not effective in any department and personal protective equipment (PPE) was insufficient. Among the workers, 41 (37.96%) had received training in radiation protection; 28 (25%) had an unsatisfactory knowledge in radiation protection. The leaded aprons were never used by 07 workers (6.25%). Conclusion: The radiation protection of the personnel of the Medical Imaging services of South Benin has several shortcomings and should be improved by the application of Law No. 2017-29 on radiological safety and nuclear security in Benin. RÉSUMÉ Objectif : Évaluer la radioprotection du personnel des services d’imagerie du Sud Bénin Matériel et méthode : Étude transversale descriptive et à collecte prospective menée sur 6mois du 1er Juin au 31Décembre 2019 dans les services d’Imagerie Médicale fonctionnels du Sud Bénin. Ont été inclus les services d’imagerie (avec des installations de radiologie fonctionnelles) des centres hospitaliers du Sud Bénin et les travailleurs intervenants ou non de façon technique dans la réalisation des examens de radiologie. Le recueil des données a été réalisé en procédant à une observation directe des infrastructures, des équipements de radiologie et de radioprotection et à la mensuration des infrastructures de radiologie puis à un entretien avec les travailleurs. Trois fiches d’enquête comportant des questions à choix multiples constituaient l’outil de collecte des données. Les variables étudiées étaient relatives aux connaissances des travailleurs en radioprotection et à l’observance des règles par ces derniers, aux infrastructures et appareil de radiologie, aux mesures de radioprotection et aux travailleurs. Les données ont ensuite été traitées, analysées à l’aide des logiciels Minitab version 17â. et EXCEL Office version 2013â. Les tests d’indépendance de khi-deux, le test exact de Fisher et le test de Mann-Whitney ont également été utilisés. Le seuil de significativité était ≤ 5%. Résultats : Ont été colligés 35 services de radiologie, 45 salles d’examen, 52 appareils de radiologie et 112 travailleurs. L’âge moyen des travailleurs dont 56,25% d’hommes, était de 32,53±0,82 ans. Une expérience professionnelle d’au moins 10 avait été notée dans 11,6% des cas. La superficie de 09 salles (20%) était insuffisante et 09 portes (20%) n’étaient pas plombées. Six appareils (14,6%) étaient en usage depuis plus de 10 ans. Le calibrage n’avait été effectué avant l’installation que pour 03 (5,77%) appareils. Il y avait dans tous les services, une absence de suivi médical des travailleurs. La surveillance dosimétrique n’était effective dans aucun service et les équipements de protection individuelle (EPI) étaient en nombre insuffisant. Parmi les travailleurs 41 (37,96%) avaient eu une formation en radioprotection ; 28 (25%) avaient un niveau peu satisfaisant en radioprotection. Les tabliers plombés n’étaient jamais utilisés par 07 (6,25%) travailleurs. Conclusion : La radioprotection du personnel des services d’Imagerie Médicale du Sud-Bénin présente plusieurs insuffisances et devrait être améliorée par l’application de la loi N° 2017-29 portant sûreté radiologique et sécurité nucléaire au Bénin.

The use of radiological activity in the operating room (OR) and a regulatory decrease of the eye lens dose warrant an assessment of how medical staff are protected from radiation. This study aims to evaluate practices and knowledge in radiation protection (RP) for OR doctors before and after training. A descriptive study of surgeons and anesthetists in a French public hospital center was conducted in 2016. An ad hoc questionnaire concerning occupational practices and knowledge about RP was distributed before and one month after RP training. Among 103 doctors attending the training, 90 answered the questionnaire before the training. Results showed a lack of knowledge and good practice in RP. Most of the participants (86.7%) had never been trained in RP and recognized insufficient knowledge. Most of them (92.2%) wore a lead apron, 50.0% a thyroid-shield, 5.6% lead glasses, 53.3% a passive dosimeter and 17.8% an electronic dosimeter. None of them benefitted from collective protective equipment such as a ceiling suspended screen. The questionnaire following the training was completed by only 35 doctors. A comparison before and after training results showed an improvement in knowledge (scores of correct responses: 5.5/16 before and 9.5/16 after training) but not in RP good practices (scores of correct responses: 3.2/7 before and 3.3/7 after training). One training session appears to be insufficient to improve the application of the safety rules when x-rays are used. Communication needs to be improved regarding RP among anesthetists and surgeons, such as training renewal, workstation analysis in OR related to x-ray use and occupational medical follow-up. Otherwise, radiological risks in OR need to be given better consideration, such as radio-induced cataract risk. It is necessary to encourage the use of dosimeters and protective equipment and to strengthen access to lead glasses and collective protective equipment, such as ceiling suspended screens. All these recommendations ensure the received dose is reduced to as low as is reasonably achievable.
