Unprecedented high-temperature CO2 selectivity in N2-phobic nanoporous covalent organic polymers

Post-combustion CO 2 capture and air separation are integral parts of the energy industry, although the available technologies remain inefficient, resulting in costly energy penalties. Here we report azo-bridged, nitrogen-rich, aromatic, water stable, nanoporous covalent organic polymers, which can be synthesized by catalyst-free direct coupling of aromatic nitro and amine moieties under basic conditions. Unlike other porous materials, azo-covalent organic polymers exhibit an unprecedented increase in CO 2 /N 2 selectivity with increasing temperature, reaching the highest value (288 at 323 K) reported to date. Here we observe that azo groups reject N 2 , thus making the framework N 2 -phobic. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that the origin of the N 2 phobicity of the azo-group is the entropic loss of N 2 gas molecules upon binding, although the adsorption is enthalpically favourable. Any gas separations that require the efficient exclusion of N 2 gas would do well to employ azo units in the sorbent chemistry.

Abstract.A number of permanently porous polymers containing Ru(bpy) n photosensitizer or a cobaloxime complex, as a protonreduction catalyst, were constructed via one-pot Sonogashira-Hagihara (SH) cross-coupling reactions. This process required minimal workup to access porous platforms with control over the apparent surface area, pore volume, and chemical functionality from suitable molecular building blocks (MBBs) containing the Ru or Co complexes, as rigid and multi-topic nodes. The cobaloxime molecular building block, generated through in situ metalation, afforded a microporous solid that demonstrated noticeable catalytic activity towards hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER) with remarkable recyclability. We further demonstrated, in two cases, the ability to affect the excited state lifetime of the covalently-immobilized Ru(bpy) 3 complex attained through deliberate utilization of the organic linkers of variable dimensions. Overall, this approach facilitates construction of tunable porous solids, with hybrid composition and pronounced chemical and physical stability, based on the well-known Ru(bpy) n or the cobaloxime complexes.

To date, hundreds of porous organic frameworks (POFs) have been successfully designed and synthesized. With regard to POFs, the first important problem is the constructing strategies of POFs. In this chapter, we introduce some principles for the synthesis of POF materials. Based on the type of POFs (crystalline or amorphous), the discussion of POFs is classified into two parts. For the synthesis of POF materials, two most vital factors should be followed. One is the monomers that are the fundamental constructing units for the synthesis of POFs, and the other is the polymerization reactions. The structure and property of POFs are determined by the utilization of monomers and polymerization reactions. In other words, the synergistic effect of two factors could influence the chemical and physical characteristics of the resulting samples.
