Conical Diamond Element Enables PDC Bit to Efficiently Drill Chert Interval at High ROP Replacing Turbine/Impregnated BHA

Abstract: Developing reserves in Kazakhstan's Chinarevskoe field frequently requires the operator to drill an 8.5-in. vertical hole section through extremely hard carbonates which contain high concentrations of problematic chert inclusions. The first significant chert layer is encountered at 3050-3110m, which has 10-50% chert content. Penetrating the chert interval with PDC bits has been challenging and in many cases impossible due to the cutters' inability to withstand high impact forces, which resulted in catastrophic… Show more

“…It is a shared goal for researchers and manufacturers to achieve better synergy between cutter technology and bit structure. Numerous developments have appeared in the past few years [9][10][11][12]: Smith Company launched an axeridge-type bit that incorporates three rock damage mechanisms, including cutting, extrusion, and turning over, and, up to now, total drilled footage amounts to 60, 960 m. Shear Bits Company proposed a composite bit (PEXUS) that combines two structure units slicing and shearing to fracture and intrude the rock, increasing the penetration rate in hard strata. Baker Hughes Company proposed a cone-PDC hybrid bit that combines the advantages of cutter extrusion and PDC cutter shear failure.…”

“…Baker Hughes company has developed a new hybrid bit product by combining fixed PDC and unfixed cone 13–15 . Smith bits of Schlumberger has successively launched 360° rotary PDC bit 16,17 and conical diamond element bits 18–20 . Chen proposes a new technology of single‐cone bit, which is composed of fixed and unfixed, 21,22 with the structural innovation, new research on new drill bits and new tools will have new breakthroughs 23,24 .…”

“…[13][14][15] Smith bits of Schlumberger has successively launched 360 rotary PDC bit 16,17 and conical diamond element bits. [18][19][20] Chen proposes a new technology of singlecone bit, which is composed of fixed and unfixed, 21,22 with the structural innovation, new research on new drill bits and new tools will have new breakthroughs. 23,24 In order to overcome the shortcomings of the prior art (Figure 1), improve the wear resistance of the single cone bit and prolong the service life of the bit, based on an in-depth analysis of the structural characteristics and working principles of the single-cone bit, this paper adopts the design concept of the single-cone bit + PDC bit and the principle that the PDC cutting teeth work slowly and alternately on the cone, with the design concept of single cone PDC composite bit proposed (Figure 3).…”

“…Recent years, drill bit researchers from all over the world have conducted a series of worthwhile studies on new bit structures and new drilling methods to overcome this difficulty. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Fortunately, in 2009, a hybrid bit, which combines the structural features and the working principles of fix-cutter polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit and roller cone bit, was developed by one service company as one of the successful cases. [10][11][12][13] As far back as 1930, the American Floyd L. Scott and his staff had invented the first hybrid bit which combines a fishtail and a roller cone bit.…”
