CONICA: the high-resolution near-infrared camera for the ESO VLT

Abstract: A high resolution near infrared camera (CONICA) for the first VLT unit is under development, which will provide diffraction limited spatial resolution being combined with the adaptive optics system NAOS (Rosset et al. 1998').CONICA serves as a multi-mode instrument for the wavelength region between 1.0 and 5.0 ,um, offering broad band, narrow band or Fabry Perot direct imaging capabilities, polarimetric modes using Wollaston prism or wire grid analyzers and long slit spectroscopy up to a spectral resolution of… Show more

“…TWA22 AB was observed at the 8.2 m VLT UT4 Yepun with the Nasmyth Adaptive Optics (AO) System NAOS (Rousset et al 2000) coupled to the high-resolution near-IR camera CONICA (Lenzen et al 1998). NAOS and CONICA (NACO) resolved the system as a tight binary for the first time on were also used coupled to a neutral density (attenuation factor of 80).…”

“…The observations were carried out in April 2002 during the commissioning of the NACO/VLT system (Lenzen et al 1998;Rousset et al 2003;Hartung et al 2000) in the Ks band. In order to simultaneously measure two orthogonal components of the polarized light, a Wollaston prism was introduced in the light path.…”

“…The images were taken with the new NAOS/CONICA adaptive optics-assisted imager/spectrometer (Lenzen et al 1998;Rousset et al 1998;Brandner et al 2002) at the Unit Telescope 4 (UT4; Yepun) at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT). 1 The 3 m spectroscopy was carried out with ISAAC on VLT UT1 (Antu).…”
