“…Alternatively, these quality indicators can be considered through considering some outputs such as morbidity and mortality rate and some indicators such as average length of stay and adverse outcomes that have been previously used in developed countries. 54,55 It was generally observed that different input and output variables were selected based on previous efficiency studies and data availability.…”

“…Recent studies in European countries have evaluated the technical efficiency of public and private hospitals using DEA, traditionally differentiating between three types of ownership: public hospitals, private for-profit hospitals and private non-profit hospitals. Examples of this work have been carried out in Italy [ 34 , 35 ], Germany [ 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 ], Austria [ 21 , 40 ], Portugal [ 41 ] and Spain [ 32 , 33 ]. The results point to an ambiguous and contradictory relationship between hospital ownership and technical efficiency, depending on the incentive structure provided by the regulatory framework to which they are subject [ 9 , 10 , 11 ].…”

“…Yang and Zeng (2014) noted the average annual production growth rate of public and private hospitals in Shenzhen from 2006 to 2010 is 4.1% and 2.8% through the Malmquist DEA model, respectively, and the annual operating quality decreases by 2.5% and 7.2% on average. Matranga and Sapienza (2015) employed the DEA model to discuss the efficiency of Sicily hospitals in 2009. The results show that the overall inefficiency of most hospitals there is due to traffic congestion and pure technical inefficiencies.…”

“…Regarding research on medical‐related issues, many scholars have analyzed the internal administration management of hospitals but most mainly cover administrational or operational efficiency, like Ouellette and Vierstraete (2004); Linna et al (2006); Caballer‐Tarazona et al (2010); Halkos and Tzeremes (2011); Hu et al (2012); Varabyova and Schreyögg (2013); Al‐Refaie et al (2014); Leleu et al (2014); Yang and Zeng (2014); Matranga and Sapienza (2015); Chen et al (2016); Khushalani and Ozcan (2017); Otay et al (2017); Omrani et al (2018); Deng et al (2019); Li and He (2019); Ferreira and Marques (2019); Giménez et al (2019); Zheng et al (2019); Jiang et al (2020); Cinaroglu (2020); Barpanda and Sreekumar (2020); and Top, Konca, and Sapaz (2020).…”
