Congenital simple hamartoma of the retinal pigment epithelium: a case report

Abstract: We report the case of a 56yearold woman who presented for a routine ophthal mological examination without visual symptoms and had a unilateral black retinal lesion that was detected by clinical examination. Fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography findings were compatible with a congenital simple hamartoma of the retinal pigment epithelium. It is very important to de tect this tumor and differentiate it from other pigmented fundus lesions that can com promise visual function or result in system… Show more

“…In previously reported cases, there was no progression of the lesion, and visual acuity had not changed [ 1 , 4 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. The boundaries of the clear black lesion in our patient, which was located in the central fovea, also did not change, although the BCVA gradually declined for the first 3 years after the initial evaluation.…”

“…Gass [ 2 ] defined the retinal pigment epithelial hamartoma as “focal, nodular, jet black lesions that usually appear to involve the full thickness of the retina and to spill onto the inner retinal surface in an umbrella fashion”. However, the lesions may be flat [ 2 ], [ 3 ], [ 4 ] or also minimally elevated [ 5 ], [ 6 ]. Other names of this lesion are congenital RPE adenoma, congenital or primary RPE hyperplasia [ 7 ], and RPE hamartoma [ 2 ].…”
