Congenital Salivary Fistula From Parotid Main Gland

Abstract: Congenital parotid fistulas are extremely rare diseases. Herein, the authors report a patient with congenital salivary fistula from parotid main gland in a 15-year-old boy. Therefore, clinicians should consider the possibility of congenital parotid fistula form parotid main gland. Surgical excision of the fistula and parotid gland can be effective treatment option of congenital parotid fistula.

“…The parotid gland opens into the oral cavity through the Stensen duct; however, various factors, such as trauma or surgery, cause aberration of the duct opening into the skin, resulting in a parotid cutaneous fistula [6]. Congenital parotid cutaneous fistulas arise from the abnormal opening of the Stensen duct [7], or the accessory parotid gland, which exists separately from the main parotid gland [8][9][10]. Patients with a parotid cutaneous fistula often report secretion from the fistula while eating.…”

“…Children with recurrent postauricular abscesses show associated congenital anomalies like postauricular sinuses, post auricular dermoid cysts, first branchial cysts, aural fistulas and aural atresia [3]. Congenital salivary fistulas of the main part of the parotid gland are rarely reported; surgical excision of the fistula and parotid gland is an effective line of treatment for this anomaly [4]. Odontogenic cutaneous fistula results from abnormal tooth canalization caused by chronic periapical infection; it may be wrongly diagnosed as a congenital fistula [5].…”
