Congenital Pancreatic Cyst

Abstract: C ongenital pancreatic cysts are extremely rare and pose unique diagnostic and surgical challenges. They are generally asymptomatic and discovered as an incidental abdominal swelling but may become symptomatic as a result of pressure on adjacent viscera (1-3). They can attain a large size and are difficult to diagnose preoperatively because they may be confused with pancreatic pseudocysts or duplication cyst of the pancreas. Embryologically, they arise from a developmental anomaly of the pancreatic ductal syst… Show more

“…9) had pancreatic tissue on the cyst wall. This situation has been reported in the literature that these cysts may also have had high amylase levels, as in our patient (11). It is known from the literature that surgical excision, cyst marsupialization with drainage and aspiration are used in the treatment of these congenital cysts.…”

“…True congenital pancreatic cysts are extremely rare in children and it is not easy to distinguish them from other pancreatic cysts such as retention, duplication, pseudocyst, neoplastic and parasitic cysts. It is also not easy to distinguish them pathologically from retention and duplication cysts (11). Although these cysts are mostly reported as unilocular and located in the body/tail of the pancreas (12), we have detected multiple cysts in one patient and a located at the head of the pancreas in another.…”

“…In the diagnostic process, pseudocysts were excluded as in both cases there was no past medical history of pancreatitis or abdominal injury [2]. Congenital pancreatic cysts also seemed unlikely due to atypical age.…”

“…Congenital pancreatic cysts also seemed unlikely due to atypical age. Both patients had abdominal ultrasound performed earlier in their lives, with no significant findings [2]. Primary hydatid cyst also was considered.…”
