Congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis

Abstract: The congenital stenosis of pyriform aperture is an unusual cause of neonatal nasal obstruction. It is due to bony overgrowth of the nasal lateral process of the maxilla. Initially this narrowest part of nasal airway was considered an isolated deformity; subsequently the congenital Stenosis of pyriform aperture was thought to represent a microform of holoprosencephaly. In this report a male neonate had respiratory distress, cyclic cyanosis and apnea after delivery. The patient underwent surgical correction of p… Show more

“…Although medical treatment failed for all the patients and required surgical enlargement of the pyriform aperture, no complications were seen, and all patients improved in symptoms and development. Similar findings were reported by Sesenna [68], Berlucchi [69], Tagliarini [70], and Losken (2002) [71].…”

“…With a few exceptions, 44,45 over the past 30 years, the term has not been used frequently in connection with other craniofacial malformations (other than cleft lip). One such exception is holoprosencephaly (HPE); 46,47 a very interesting aspect is discussed in one study: 48 several specific mutations causing clear phenotypic signs of "microform HPE" could be linked with above average intellectual function. 48 It is important to emphasize that most recent studies did not use the term in the same sense intended by Mengele.…”

“…2 Other complications of CNPAS can be observed later in life and are usually associated with a microform of holoprosencephaly (HPE). 4,5 The complications of HPE result from abnormal development of the prosencephalon and medial facial structures, which can include pituitary abnormalities, craniofacial and brain malformations, a single central maxillary incisor, ocular defects, and varying degrees of mental retardation. 4Y8 Some studies report that developmental delay is present in all live-born HPE patients and is worse with severe brain malformations.…”
