“…Classification of epileptic seizures and of the epilepsies (Merlis, 1970;Dreifuss et al, 1985), in addition to the complexity of AED treatment, creates major problems in the evaluation of the malformation risk in the offspring of parents with epilepsy. The main purpose of the present author's studies was to elucidate whether the reported association of parental epilepsy and an increased rate of CL(P), CP and CHD in the offspring was due to genetic factors rather than to AED (Friis, 1979;Friis et al, 1981Friis et al, , 1986Friis & Hauge, 1985).…”

“…The author's investigations on an association of congenital heart defects and epilepsy. Friis & Hauge (1985) found 18 cases of CHD among 2461 live-born children of an unselected group of 979 males and 1093 females with epilepsy; 8 CHD children had fathers and 10 had mothers with epilepsy. The prevalence of CHD did not differ significantly in children of epileptic fathers (8 of 1062: 0.75%) or of epileptic mothers (10 of 1399: 0.71 olo), from background population values (Laursen 1979: 0.80%).…”

“…The hypothesis that epilepsy per se increases the risk of congenital malformations was originally advanced in a large American and Finnish study (Shapiro et al., 1976). Although some subsequent reports found an increased risk in the absence of antiepileptic therapy or in the children of fathers with epilepsy (Meyer, 1973; Majewski et al., 1981; Beck‐Mannagetta et al., 1982; Koch et al., 1982; Friis & Hauge, 1985; Rating, 1987; Koch et al., 1992), a recent meta‐analysis concluded that there is no increased risk (Fried et al., 2004). The findings of this meta‐analysis, however, should be interpreted with caution given the criteria used to select the studies, the small number of these studies, and their small sample size.…”
