The "Adeloye-Odeku disease" or congenital dermoid cysts over the anterior fontanelle, is a rare congenital disorder of children initially described in Nigeria. It has been rarely reported in the Indian population (3 cases in 2 reports). These rare lesions are operated on by neurosurgeons in view of their location and differential diagnoses. We present two infants with the condition and a comprehensive review of the literature on pubmed using six common phrases used to describe this condition. The review was undertaken to analyze the reasons for the paucity of cases from the Indian sub-continent. The ethnicity, differential diagnosis, radiological features and management is discussed.KeywoRds: Adeloye-Odeku's disease, Dermoid cyst, Anterior fontanelle, Pediatric ÖZ "Adeloye-Odeku hastalığı" veya anterior fontanel üzerinde konjenital dermoid kistler ilk olarak Nijerya'da tanımlanmış nadir bir çocuk çağı konjenital hastalıktır. Hint popülasyonunda nadiren bildirilmiştir (2 sunumda 3 vaka). Bu nadir lezyonlar konumları ve ayırıcı tanıları nedeniyle beyin cerrahları tarafından ameliyat edilir. Bu durumun görüldüğü iki vakayı ve bu durumu tanımlamak üzere sık kullanılan altı sözcük kullanılarak pubmed literatürünün kapsamlı bir taramasının sonuçları sunuyoruz. Derleme hint alt kıtasında vakaların azlığının nedenlerini analiz etmek için yapıldı. Etnik köken, ayırıcı tanı, radyolojik özellikler ve takip anlatılmaktadır.

It is a benign and curative lesion and most of the time, can be diagnosed at birth. From 1994 to 2001, three patients were operated with this kind of lesion and after reviewing the literature we found 229 cases and only 6 cases described in Brazil. Many different types of lesions over the children's skull exist and some are commonly diagnosed in daily practice. Congenital dermoid inclusion cyst over the anterior fontanel (CDIC) is a rare and benign lesion located over the anterior fontanel. Many children are examinated with lesions over the skull in our hospital. In a recent review of these children, our attention was drawn to three patients with a cystic rounded mass over the anterior fontanel. These three patients showed no neurological abnormality and the diagnosis of CDIC were confirmed by surgery and histological examination. Our literature search found 229 other cases (Table 1) of CDIC worldwide. CASESFrom 1994 to 2001, three patients were operated with a cystic mass over the anterior fontanel, being of different ages and without neurological abnormality at the time. The first patient a three-year-old-white boy. The second patient (Fig 1) a five-month-old-black girl and the third patient (Fig 2) a five-month-old-white boy. All patients were treated with surgery and using the same approach for each of them (Figs 3 to 12 -the second patient shows all the surgical steps, for better illustration). All three patients presented in this paper are similar in all aspects when compared to those in other papers. Two patients were reviewed recently. The first patient (Fig 13 -no photograph prior to surgery) has a learning disability but is not due to the cyst. He was noted to have a small lipoma over the callosal body. The authors report on 13 cases of dermoid cysts over the anterior fontanelle in Czechoslovak children. These children were 2-19 months of age; with a male-to-female ratio of 2:1. The cyst sizes ranged from 10 to 30 mm. Hence, the number of cases published in the world so far in children has increased to 174. Simultaneously, the number of European cases has increased to 30 (17.2%). Nevertheless, the dominance of the reported cases is still 74 in America (42.5%) and 45 in Africa (25.9%).
