Abstract: BackgroundCongenital anomalies and their primary prevention are a crucial public health issue. This work aimed to estimate the prevalence of congenital anomalies in Brindisi, a city in southeastern Italy at high risk of environmental crisis.MethodsThis research concerned newborns up to 28 days of age, born between 2001 and 2010 to mothers resident in Brindisi and discharged with a diagnosis of congenital anomaly. “…Cve /ATD Cve group, three patients had severe cardiac abnormalities (30,31,32) namely, tetralogy of Fallot (mother given L-T 4 after surgery during all pregnancy and neonate with normal thyroid function), left ventricular hypertrophy with pericardial detachment (mother started on propylthiouracil during the second trimester for hyperthyroidism and neonate with normal thyroid function but hyperkinesis on day 1), and ventricular dysfunction (mother given propylthiouracil during the second trimester for hyperthyroidism and neonate diagnosed with hyperthyroidism on day 3). Figure 1 shows the thyroid function of the 33 neonates born to mothers positive for TRAb.…”

“…Recently, most studies have focused on the identification of risk factors of NSCL/P. Many epidemiological studies have confirmed that maternal age [1012], maternal educational level [2, 13], family income [13, 14], abnormal reproductive histories [15], family history [1416], history of infection during pregnancy [17], medication use during pregnancy [18, 19], ambient environment pollution [20], parental occupational hazards exposure [2123], maternal nutrient intake [2326], and maternal lifestyle factors (alcohol drinking, smoking) [2729] are associated with NSCL/P. However, an individual risk prediction tool for NSCL/P has not been reported.…”

“…This could be causative for alterations in many physiological processes and could lead to disease and abnormalities in exposed individuals [ 6 ]. An increased risk of congenital anomalies and perinatal mortality due to maternal exposure during pregnancy in polluted areas has been also documented [ 7 ].…”
