Congenital absence of the bilateral internal carotid artery: a review of the associated (ab)normalities from a newborn status to the eighth decade of life

Abstract: This review noted all the cases of the bilateral ICA aplasia published for the past 104 years. Although there were 11.6% of cases of the associated cerebral aneurysms and 1-4 cases of 16 other diseases, approximately one quarter of the cases was without any pathology.

“…Furthermore, in our previous study we have demonstrated that the marked alteration of the glomerular filtration rate and of the proximal tubule reabsorption observed in the ZDF rats was prevented by oral administration of RLE, and we hypothesized that these events were correlated with its action on ROS productions [22]. In fact, in agreement with other research [39][40][41], in which the antioxidant protective effect on the diabetic nephropathy progression was demonstrated, we found that RLE restored the antioxidant pathways, in particular SOD, CAT, and GPx activities.…”

“…Congenital absence of ICA is a rare entity and occurs in less than 0.01% of the population [ 5 , 6 ]. Bilateral absence of arteries is about 10% [ 7 ] and has been identified in 60 cases in the reviewed literature [ 8 ]. The absence may be related to agenesis or aplasia ICA [ 9 11 ]; however, agenesis indicates the complete failure of vessel formation and absence of carotid canal into the embryo what was the case of “our patient”.…”

“…Although a headache was more common among them, it was also an initial symptom in other cases of vascular absence, such as the uni-or bilateral absence of the VA [92], or the bilateral absence of the ICA [93], as well as in many pathological disorders. A suspect pulsatile swelling in the neck caused by the cervical aortic arch, as a reason of/for the discovery of the CCA aplasia [6, 9, 33, 34, 36, 39, 67, 70, 73-75, 77, 81], may not always be related to it, as evidenced by Shepherd et al [37].…”

“…ere was no associated pathology in 17.80% of cases; however, there were 21 different pathological states in other cases, and among them the aneurysms of some cerebral arteries in 13.69% [24,31,42,52,53,58,61,62,67,71]. e authors have presented the morphofunctional status of blood vessels and stated the clinical importance in the cases of the absence of the VA [92], or the bilateral ICA [93], and the CCA in this manuscript; the next task will be a comparison of the cases with the le and the ones with the right ICA absence.…”
