Conformation of neutral polyampholyte chains in salt solutions: a light scattering study

Abstract: The salt aqueous solution properties of a low charge density polyampholyte terpolymer with a balanced stoichiometry of charges were investigated by static and dynamic light scattering. At high ionic strength, the sample is entirely soluble and the chains exhibit an excluded volume conformation. When the salt content is lowered, part of the sample precipitates, leaving in the supernatant highly swollen chaing. The rmulta are interpreted by assuming that, due to different reactivity ratios of the monomers, there… Show more

“…Since the zeta potential may be related t Å 2 0 (w/z), [6] in the same way, a correlation can be established between where t represents the slope of the size frequency curve in the values of the zeta potential and the net excess charge the domain of the small aggregates, and z and w are the ( f 0 g) of the polymer. The existence of an anisotropic exponents of the power laws distribution of positively and negatively charged chain segments inside the layer should be evident in this way.…”

“…[42] The collapse transition is broadened by the distribution of chains with different net charges. [54] A surprising observation is that the modified samples with 1 mol-% hydrophobe content remain soluble in the whole NaCl concentration range. One would think a priori that the presence of hydrophobic units would favor the collapse of the chains and their precipitation.…”

“…Corpart et al 8 and Skouri et al 9 examined the aqueous solution properties of polyampholytes using viscometry and light scattering measurements. Baker et al 10 later examined balanced polyampholyte hydrogel swelling and proposed a semiquantitative model based on a Flory type theory with Debye-Hückel contributions.…”
