Conformable Holographic Metasurfaces

Abstract: Metasurface holograms are typically fabricated on rigid substrates. Here we experimentally demonstrate broadband, flexible, conformable, helicity multiplexed metasurface holograms operating in the visible range, offering increased potential for real life out-of-the-lab applications. Two symmetrically distributed holographic images are obtained when circularly polarized light impinges on the reflective-type metasurface positioned on non-planar targets. The two off-axis images with high fidelity are interchangea… Show more

“…Except for EM cloaking, conformal metasurfaces can be utilized to achieve other fascinating physical effects, which form important research directions [315][316][317][318][319][320]. For instance, Faraon's group proposed to decouple the optical properties of an object from its physical shape by capping a thin and flexible metasurface on the object conformally.…”

“…For any given object, one can use the developed theory to design an appropriate metacoating to cover it, in order to achieve the desired optical effects, such as anomalous diffraction and optical illusion [316]. Moreover, conformal metasurfaces can also be employed to realize even more complex functionalities, such as displays [317] and holograms [318,319]. 4.…”

“…For the linearly polarized incident light, the optical illusion of a “vase” can be generated. Since helicity multiplexed holograms have great fabrication tolerance, the commonly used silicon substrate can be replaced by soft materials such as SU‐8, and the hologram is conformed to a pair of safety glasses (Figure e).…”

“…This phenomenon can therefore be of use in many different fields of science starting from sensing to photocatalysis to on‐chip optical communications . Plasmonics has been successfully used to demonstrate such devices as optical tweezers, nanolasers, on‐chip modulators, solar water splitting electrochemical cells, lenses, holograms, heat‐assisted magnetic recording, etc. Such a broad range of devices can only be built on a backbone of in‐depth and thorough study of a material platform for plasmonics.…”
