Steel structure plays a significant role in civil engineering. However, there are many factors affecting steel erectors and contractors to have a successful erection of steel structures. Thus, this study seeks to examine the factors affecting steel structure erection in construction projects within the context of a developing country. The study adopted a survey research method; a questionnaire to identify 47 factors, were assessed. A purposive sampling approach was used to identify 20 construction companies specialising in steel structures erections in Lagos, Nigeria. Sixty-three (63) questionnaires were distributed to the targeted population, which included 32 project managers, 14 project engineers and 17 site engineers of current and past steel structure projects carried out by the selected companies in Lagos. The data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results revealed skills and experience, job site planning, availability of electrical power for tools, insufficient supervision and method of construction as the top most five factors affecting steel structure erection in construction project in Nigeria. The findings provide in-depth insight of the factors affecting steel structure erection in construction project that can help project managers in development of strategies for improving the erection of steel structure in the construction industry.

This paper aims to form a concept of infrastructure management based on a multicriteria approach to determining management priorities. As the complexity of infrastructure construction and maintenance management requires looking at this problem from different aspects, the proposed multicriteria approach in this paper is based on the application of a two-phase analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method and technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method. Using the two-phase AHP method, the process of determining the relative weights of the criteria is improved with the aim of providing better management of stakeholders as one of the essential preconditions for the success of the entire management process. In this way, it is desired to simulate the decision-making process as realistically as possible, in which the opinions and interests of all stakeholders are respected, but the key decision-maker is responsible for the final decision. Furthermore, with the help of the TOPSIS method, a ranking list of maintenance management priorities is formed, based on which it is possible to distribute limited financial resources intended for annual maintenance more rationally. The stability of the TOPSIS results was confirmed by a sensitivity analysis when changing the relative weights of the criteria. The proposed allocation of financial resources represents the basis for a better design of the maintenance management plan of the analyzed infrastructure elements, thus completing the observed gap in the existing literature. The aim of the above is to improve the planning function and at the same time to improve the implementation, monitoring, and control management functions, which creates a more efficient management system that can preserve the value of the analyzed infrastructure elements and extend their lifetime.

The chances to remedy the construction industry from its diverse problems have weakened due to the breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Although the pandemic is almost reduced to history, its impacts linger with acute effects on the industry’s performance. This study investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the construction sector of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria with a specific focus on problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Using survey research design, structured questionnaires were administered to 213 respondents (61 Architects, 32 builders, 46 quantity surveyors, and 74 Civil Engineers). Data analysis involved mean item scores, Chi-Square and Kruskal Wallis tests. The findings revealed that COVID-19 has severed the movement of people and interpersonal relationships, delayed project timelines, escalated transportation problems, and induced high costs of construction resources and project costs. The implication shows that stakeholders in the construction industry are still glued to work ethics during the COVID-19 period or are yet to modify behaviours into the industry norms in terms of human relations and movement. A change in perception is needed to restore the stakeholders to the traditional way of life through an awareness campaign, while the government needs to strengthen economic recovery policies and institute pro-construction industry parameters to reduce the cost of construction resources and overall project costs to accelerate the recovery path of the sector.
