Introduction: Determining the innate professional values of nursing students during their academic years in nursing schools provide a more concrete measurement of their professional readiness when they become licensed nurses. Background: Among all nursing subjects and courses, the Nursing Leadership and Management contains topics that emphasize professional adjustment and value development among students to become more professionally ready for the real world experience of the nursing profession. Objective: The study aimed to determine the perceived professional value orientation of the students to the five factors of Nurse Professional Values Scale-Revised. These factors are the values of Caring, Professionalism, Trust, Activism, and Justice.Methodology: Using quantitative cross-sectional study design as the methodology, it included 200 nursing students both from the female and male campuses of a Saudi University. These 200 students as participants have finished the course Nursing Leadership and Management.Results: The responses of the participants are mostly focused on the Caring factor where when ranked occupies the first top five (5) positions relating to the items 22, 21, 24, 25 23 with a mean of 3.49 (SD = 1.19), 3.44 (SD = 1.28), 3.44 (SD = 1.24), 3.39 (SD = 1.28), 3.37 (SD = 1.22), respectively. While the bottom five (5) of the responses pertains to the factors Professionalism (item 6), Caring (item 18), Professionalism (item 5), Trust (items 2 and 1). These factors received a mean of 3.9 (SD = 1.25), 3.17 (SD = 1.35), 3.16 (SD = 1.15), 3.14 (SD = 1.22), 3.00 (SD = 1.39), respectively.Conclusion: Caring being the essential element of the nursing profession is the most valued quality of nursing students. A full understanding of the essence of caring allows the future nurse professionals to deliver compassionate and sensitive nursing service.

Background: Nurses are the main administrators of opioids in hospitals and enjoy some autonomy when using them to manage pain. Nevertheless evidence suggests they exercise this freedom restrictively with the reasons for this self-limitation remaining unclear. Nurses are influenced by personal and professional values and by patients’ attributes. Intoxicated patients pose a particular challenge. This study therefore investigated whether cautious attitudes towards opioids were aggravated in intoxicated patients and influenced by personal values. Methods: A two-version questionnaire was developed. Each presented a case vignette describing a patient in acute pain who was either intoxicated or not intoxicated. Questionnaires contained identical case statements inquiring about concerns regarding opioids, preferred analgesics and statements about opioids and personal values. They were distributed prospectively in a cross-sectional, multi-centre design. Equal distribution of both questionnaires was achieved through randomization of wards. Regression analysis was employed to determine predictors for responses to the case statements. Results: In total, n = 374 (26%) nurses returned questionnaires, 85% were female, 39% worked in surgery and 64% had >10 years experience. A total of 78% were concerned using opioids in the intoxicated patient and 70% preferred non-opioids instead. Most nurses agreed familiarity with an opioid gives them more confidence and they were more concerned in patients with a history of drug abuse. They neither associated opioids with helping patients to die nor with drug abuse. The majority endorsed value statements representing ‘universalism’, ‘hedonism’ and ‘benevolence’ while disagreeing with ‘power’ and ‘stimulation’. Nurses concerns were predicted by values indicating ‘conformity’ and ‘achievement’. Conclusion: Nurses were concerned giving opioids to intoxicated patients and preferred non-opioids instead. These concerns were predicted by personal values representing ‘Conservation’ (‘conformity’) and ‘Self-Enhancement’ (‘achievement’). Therefore, stigmatizing mental models likely contribute to nurses’ reluctance to use opioids. Interestingly, personal ambition might protect nurses from discriminatory thoughts and practice.

RESUMO Enquadramento: Os conhecimentos, crenças e estereótipos acerca do VIH são um desafio para os estudantes de enfermagem, constituindo-se estes como um importante grupo para uma intervenção formativa. Objectivo do estudo: Verificar se a intervenção formativa acerca do VIH/SIDA influencia o nível de conhecimentos e estereótipos. Metodologia: Investigação-ação, com uma amostra de 30 estudantes do primeiro ano, intervenção formativa sobre o VIH/SIDA com follow-up após 3 meses. Para colheita de dados foi utilizado um questionário de caracterização sociodemográfica e a escala de avaliação de estereótipos sobre VIH/SIDA (SAAQ-"The Stereotypes About AIDS Questionnaire"). Resultados: No global verifica-se que os estudantes detêm conhecimentos sobre o vírus. No estudo verifica-se que após a intervenção formativa houve melhorias do conhecimento em nove das 15 dimensões analisadas, sendo que apenas a dimensão "sexualidade" é estatisticamente significativa (p=0,015). Conclusões: Os estudantes de enfermagem apresentam níveis de conhecimento razoáveis, no entanto, face aos resultados, sugerimos mais formação ao longo da licenciatura.
