Confined turbulent convection

Abstract: New measurements of the Nusselt number have been made in turbulent thermal convection confined in a cylindrical container of aspect ratio unity. The apparatus is essentially the same as that used by Niemela et al. (2000), except that the height was halved. The measurement techniques were also identical but the mean temperature of the flow was held fixed for all Rayleigh numbers. The highest Rayleigh number was $2 \times 10^{15}$. Together with existing data, the new measurements are analysed with the purpose o… Show more

“…These results show a slightly decrease of N u with increasing P r, in agreement with the Grossmann and Lohse predictions [33]. However, a slightly different behavior of Nusselt number in the cell of Γ = 1 with respect to the cell of Γ = 1/2 was already found in the dependence of N u versus Ra [52].…”

“…The influence of finite wall conductivity (Ahlers 2000;Roche et al 2001;Verzicco 2002;Niemela & Sreenivasan 2003) was negligible, except for the small cell where a correction of order 1% was applied. These experiments are described in detail by Brown et al (2005).…”

“…In helium gas beyond Ra ≈ 10 11 Chavanne et al (1997Chavanne et al ( , 2001) found a steeper increase in the logarithmic slope of the Nu(Ra) curve than Niemela et al (2000Niemela et al ( , 2001 and they associated this finding with the ultimate Kraichnan regime. However, there is a major controversy about whether these and other large-Ra data are 'contaminated' by NOB effects (Chavanne et al 1997(Chavanne et al , 2001Roche et al 2001Roche et al , 2002Niemela et al 2000Niemela et al , 2001Niemela & Sreenivasan 2003;Ashkenazi & Steinberg 1999).…”
