This paper examines the effect of PBO (P-phenylene benzobisoxazole)–FRCM (Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrix) reinforcement on the stiffness of eccentrically compressed reinforced concrete columns. Reinforcement with FRCM consists of bonding composite meshes to the concrete substrate by means of mineral mortar. Longitudinal and/or transverse reinforcements made of PBO (P-phenylene benzobisoxazole) mesh were applied to the analyzed column specimens. When assessing the stiffness of the columns, the focus was on the effect of the composite reinforcement itself, the value and eccentricity of the longitudinal force and the decrease in the modulus of elasticity of the concrete with increasing stress intensity in the latter. Dependences between the change in the elasticity modulus of the concrete and the change in the stiffness of the tested specimens were examined. The relevant standards, providing methods of calculating the stiffness of composite columns, were used in the analysis. For columns, which were strengthened only transversely with PBO mesh, reinforcement increases their load capacity, and at the same time, the stiffness of the columns increases due to the confinement of the cross-section. The stiffness depends on the destruction of the concrete core inside its composite jacket. In the case of columns with transverse and longitudinal reinforcement, the presence of longitudinal reinforcement reduces longitudinal deformations. The columns failed at higher stiffness values in the whole range of the eccentricities.

Compression performance and bearing capacity calculation model of small-eccentricity columns strengthened with textile-reinforced mortar (TRM)

To study the compression performance of TRM-strengthened columns with small eccentricities, a total of 9 reinforced concrete (RC) columns with end corbels were subjected to compression testing. The test parameters are as follows: the number of textile layers, the ratio of longitudinal reinforcement, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) short-cut fiber volume fraction. The experimental results indicated that, compared to the control, columns with three layers of textile exhibited an approximately 10.66% increase in the bearing capacity. However, the effect increased only slightly when the number of textile layers increased to 4. Besides, the effect was improved with the increase in the ratio of longitudinal reinforcement and PVA fiber volume fraction. Finally, based on laboratory tests and related research results, a model for calculating normal section bearing capacity of TRM-strengthened columns with small eccentricities was presented. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental data demonstrated the applicability of the proposed model.

Fabric-reinforced cementitious matrices (FRCM) are promising technologies that respond to today’s architectural approaches. However, due to their high strength and ductility, they are starting to be implemented in buildings as strengthening systems. In this experimental study, the amount of fiber along the load direction in high-strength cementitious matrices and the effects of the fiber orientation on FRCM mechanical properties were studied. A total of four different composites were produced with two fabrics and two matrices. Tensile and flexural tests were carried out on composites. Within the scope of microstructure studies, scanning electron microscope micrographs were obtained and analyzed, along with microtopography sections. The main result obtained from the study indicates that as the fiber area in the direction of the load increases, the load order carried in this direction increases. However, this increase does not have to be proportional to the fiber area used in the direction of the load. The fiber coating and coating matrix interface play important roles in a composite’s performance. The carbon fibers can be used more efficiently by using them along the load direction and the loads in the matrix can be transferred to the carbon fibers by creating a larger fiber–matrix interface area.
