Institutional constraints impede firms’ open innovation. They have been a challenge, obstructing growth and sustainable development. Research on open innovation has shown that the quality of institutions essentially affects innovation in firms. Hence, prior research has made efforts to incorporate the quality of institutions into open innovation analysis. We can use a series of analyses to examine the impact of corruption, the tax system, and other indicators on firm innovation performance. However, developing economies, such as countries in sub-Saharan Africa, represent a specific group of countries that have long been perceived as those mostly deficient in the rule of law, with poor regulatory quality and a great deal of corruption. In these countries, it is also possible to see a lower number of studies, as the inability to obtain quality data to perform empirical analyses can often limit researchers. Nevertheless, employing data from the World Bank’s 2019 Enterprise Survey, this research aimed at exploring the determinants of sustainable open innovation as well as the effect of institutional quality on firms’ capacity utilization and process innovation through a PLS structural equation model analysis. Our research showed interesting findings, such as the fact that the quality of institutions significantly affects firms’ use of OI instruments and capacity utilization. This research also provides for the novelty of the analysis of capacity utilization in an open innovation analysis. The results support the hypotheses that low institutional quality negatively affects firms’ implementation of inbound open innovation instruments, and that there is a strong and positive effect of low institutional quality on firms’ capacity utilization. In addition, we confirm the premise that firms’ implementation of inbound open innovation instruments has a positive and significant influence on firms’ process innovation.

Green development is an effective way to achieve economic growth and social development in a harmonious, sustainable, and efficient manner. Although the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) plays an important strategic role in China, our understanding of its spatiotemporal characteristics, as well as the multiple factors affecting its green development level (GDL), remains limited. This study used the entropy weight method (EWM) to analyze the temporal evolution and spatial differentiation characteristics of the GDL in the YREB from 2011 to 2019. Further, fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) was used to analyze the influence path of GDL. The results showed that the GDL of the YREB increased from 2015 to 2019, but the overall level was still not high, with high GDL mainly concentrated in the lower reaches. The GDL model changed from being environmentally driven and government supported in 2011 to being environmentally and economically driven since 2014. The core conditions for high GDL changed from economic development level (EDL) to scientific technological innovation level (STIL) and environmental regulation (ER). The path for improving GDL is as follows: In regions with high EDL, effective ER, moderate openness level (OL), and high STIL are the basis, supplemented by a reasonable urbanization scale (US). In areas with low EDL, reasonable industrial structure (IS) and STIL are the core conditions for development; further, EDL should be improved and effective ER and OL implemented. Alternatively, without considering changes to EDL, improvement can be achieved through reasonable OL and US or effective ER. This study provides a new method for exploring the path of GDL and a reference for governments to effectively adjust green development policies.

In an increasingly globalized environment, one of the important aspects for knowledge development and usage has been the advantage of benefiting from knowledge spillover across international boundaries. The knowledge literature recognizes the importance of the combining internal and external knowledge in the innovation process. Knowledge spillover from abroad is an important channel of external knowledge needed to complement the innovation activities in the domestic economies of countries. However, the complementarities of external knowledge and domestic innovation activities also remains a thorny issue that remain unresolved in the knowledge literature. On one hand, there is a believe that combinatorial efforts of domestic and foreign knowledge activities are a good recipe for innovation. There are other strands of literature that are concerned that when foreign knowledge is not complementary with domestic innovation activities increased innovation may not be realized. Contrary to the widely held view of the positive impact of FDI on host economies, the literature shows a rather complex relationship between FDI and economic outcomes in V4 countries. OECD countries, being the main trading partners of V4 countries, the study therefore investigates the FDI channel for knowledge spillover from OECD countries and how such knowledge spillover complements V4 countries innovation activities to affect innovation outcomes. Data for the study is panel data on the V4 countries, spanning 2003 to 2012 which is sourced from the OECD database. The study applies panel regression analysis and controls for country and time fixed effect to determine the role of FDI knowledge spillover from OECD countries on innovation outcome in V4 countries. The findings of the study indicate that proportionate change in innovation is greater than a proportionate change in FDI knowledge spillover in the opposite direction. The results of the analysis show that knowledge spillover from FDI does not complement V4 countries’ internal R&D activities to improve innovation. FDI knowledge spillover channel is not a good complement to domestic R&D activities to enhance V4 countries’ innovation performance. It is concluded that, FDI knowledge spillover channel does not complement innovation activities to improve innovation outcome. The study provides useful practical implications and recommendations.
