Information security using chaotic dynamics is a novel topic in the wireless sensor network (WSN) research field. After surveying analog and digital chaotic security systems, we give a state of the art of chaotic S-Box design. The substitution tables are nonlinear maps that strengthen and enhance block crypto-systems. This paper deals with the design of new dynamic chaotic S-Boxes suitable for implementation on wireless sensor nodes. Our proposed schemes are classified into two categories: S-Box based on discrete chaotic map with floating point arithmetic (cascading piecewise linear chaotic map and a three-dimensional map) and S-Box based on discrete chaotic map with fixed-point arithmetic (using discretized Lorenz map and logistic-tent map). The security analysis and implementation process on WSN are discussed. The proposed methods satisfy Good S-Box design criteria and exceed the performance of Advanced Encryption Standard static S-Box in some cases. The energy consumption of different proposals and existing chaotic S-Box designs are investigated via a platform simulator and a real WSN testbed equipped with TI MSP430f1611 micro-controller. The simulations and the experimental results show that our proposed S-Box design with fixed-point arithmetic Lorenz map has the lowest energy-consuming profile compared with the other studied and proposed S-Box design.

Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (LR-WPANs) have widespread usage for industrial applications because of being small, power-efficient, and low-cost. Therefore security is important issue for LR-WPANs. The IEEE 802.15.4 standard is one of the most common solution for LR-WPANs that defines only the physical and data-link layers of the OSI model. For this reason most of security issues are ignored owing to scope of this standard. Hence, security mechanisms should be implemented in the applications. This paper presents using chaotic-based encryption in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard to secure communication.In addition, modelling and simulation of the proposed structure have been realized using OPNET Modeler.

The wireless sensor network (WSN) has been widely used in various fields, but it still remains in the preliminary discovery and research phase with a lack of various related mature technologies. Traditional encryption schemes are not suitable for wireless sensor networks due to intrinsic features of the nodes such as low energy, limited computation capability, and lack of storage resources. In this paper, we present a novel block encryption scheme based on the integer discretization of a chaotic map, the Feistel network structure, and an S-box. The novel scheme is fast, secure, has low resource consumption and is suitable for wireless sensor network node encryption schemes. The experimental tests are carried out with detailed analysis, showing that the novel block algorithm has a large key space, very good diffusion and disruptive performances, a strict avalanche effect, excellent statistical balance, and fast encryption speed. These features enable the encryption scheme to pass the SP800-22 test. Meanwhile, the analysis and the testing of speed, time, and storage space on the simulator platform show that this new encryption scheme is well able to hide data information in wireless sensor networks.
