Gerbils were allowed to explore an arena containing an object. The external reference frame was reduced to a single visual landmark. After habituation, gerbils entered the arena from a new direction. A second object, identical to the first, was placed symmetrically with regards to the landmark. The second object was explored more than the first, a result showing that it was differentiated from the first on the basis of its location. This result suggests that during the course of exploration the gerbils had learned about the spatial features of the experimental situation.
