Conductivity of Fracture Proppants in Multiple Layers

Abstract: The fluid conductivity of a hydraulic fracture is critical in determining the effectiveness of the fracturing treatment. Two factors considered here can greatly affect that conductivity. First is the reservoir environment; for example, the presence of hot brine can reduce the permeability of brittle proppants under stress. The second is deviation from Darcy flow, or turbulence. Introduction Fracture conductivity limits the amount of stimulation achieved from … Show more

“…The numerically determined Dupuit-Forchheimer coefficients are compared to the models by Macdonald et al [11], Ergun [10], Ward [12] and Cooke [13] described in Table 1. The Ward correlation [12] fails to give a reasonable estimate of F, whereas the models of Macdonald et al [11] (RMS = 28.7%) and Ergun [10] (RMS = 26.7%) agree well with the numerical results for high porosities, but underestimate F for lower porosities.…”

“…This causes inaccurate measurement of conductivity. The most approved family of conductivity cells are the family of so-called Mobil [74] or Cooke [75,76] conductivity cells which were proposed by API [77] as a standard procedure and modified by different laboratories later. The rest of this section is focused on this latter family of conductivity cells.…”

“…The conductivity of fracture proppants and the uniform-flux/infiniteconductivity-mathematical models and solutions for a vertical fracture in multiple layers were evaluated and developed (Cooke, 1973;Gringarten et al, 1974;Ozkan and Raghavan, 1991). The mathematical models for calculating transient pressure for a finite-conductivity fracture were introduced (Bennett et al, 1986;Cinco-Ley and Samaniego, 1981;Gringarten 1974;Hagoort, 2009;Kuchuk et al, 1991;Liu and Wang, 1993;Wang et al, 2005) but they only focused on the infinite-conductivity fracture without considering varying conductivity.…”
