a b s t r a c tChalcogenide glasses in the pseudo-ternary system NaX-GeS 2 -Ga 2 S 3 (X¼ Cl or I) were synthesized. Different series were investigated in order to highlight the influence of the sodium halide addition on two different host glasses (GeS 2 ) 80 (Ga 2 S 3 ) 20 and (GeS 2 ) 72 (Ga 2 S 3 ) 28 . Macroscopic properties including density and characteristic temperatures, such as glass transition temperatures T g and crystallization temperature T x , were determined for a maximum molar content of NaX equal to 15%. The evolution of the optical band-gap and the chemical stability following the composition were also studied. Conductivity measurements were also performed and compared to other Li-based GeS 2 -Ga 2 S 3 glasses. The results were discussed taking into account the cation and anion nature and also the glass packing density.

Recently, there has been increasing demand on finding new solid electrolytes based on glassy material, due to their potential applications for solid state rechargeable battery. Superionic conducting glasses have many advantageous compared with the crystalline, or composite electrolytes, such as easy in preparation, low melting point, no grain broundary, wide composition range and easy to be formed as thin film. Among superionic glasses, the family of silver phosphate glasses (AgI) x (AgPO 3 ) 1-x and lithium phosphate glasses (LiI) x (LiPO 3 ) 1-x , are the most interested materials to be investigated. Many experiments have been performed to investigate the properties of those materials. This paper will review the recent results of the lithium glasses (LiI) x (LiPO 3 ) 1-x , such as the preparation, appearance, structure, electrical and thermal properties. The x-ray data shows the precipitate occured at x=0.4, indicating the solubility limit of (LiI) x (LiPO 3 ) 1-x was reached at this composition. The microstructure data observed by SEM showed the different area between the smooth surface for x=0.3 and appearance of cluster at x=0.4. Comparison between glassy LiPO 3 and (LiI) 0.3 (LiPO 3 ) 1-x as the result of Raman spectra analysis, suggested a new feature at around 1000 cm -1 , indicating the depolymerization of the non bridging oxygen, due to the presence of LiI component. The room temperature conductivities of (LiI) x (LiPO 3 ) 1-x with x=0.3 and 0.4 are 2.7x10 -6 and 8.8x10 -7 S/cm, respectively, which are 3 orders of magnitudes higher than the undoped glass LiPO 3 . In general, the silver glass has better ionic conductivity than the lithium glass; but in application the lithium battery has better performance and produces higher voltage.

Glasses with composition (70 -x) B 2 O 3 Á15Bi 2 O 3 Á15LiFÁxNb 2 O 5 with x = 0-1.0 mol% were prepared by conventional glass-melting technique. The molar volume V m values decrease and the glass transition temperatures T g increase with increase of Nb 2 O 5 content up to 0.2 mol%, which indicates that Nb 5? ions act as a glass former. Beyond 0.2 mol% Nb 2 O 5 the V m increases and the T g decreases, which suggests that Nb 5? ions act as a glass modifier. The FTIR spectra suggest that Nb 5? ions are incorporated into the glass network as NbO 6 octahedra, substituting BO 4 groups. The temperature dependence of the dc conductivity follows the Greaves variable range hopping model below 454 K, and follows the small polaron hopping model at temperatures [454 K. r dc , r ac conductivity and dielectric constant (e) decrease and activation energy for dc conduction DE dc which increases with increasing Nb 2 O 5 content up to 0.2 mol%, whereas r dc , r ac and (e) increase and DE dc decreases with increasing Nb 2 O 5 content beyond 0.2 mol%. The impedance spectroscopy shows a single semicircle or arcs which indicate only the ionic conduction mechanism. The electric modulus formalism indicates that the conductivity relaxation is occurring at different frequencies exhibit temperatureindependent dynamical process. The (FWHM) of the normalized modulus increases with increase in Nb 2 O 5 content suggesting that the distribution of relaxation times is associated with the charge carriers Li ? or F -ions in the glass network.
