Conducting Miller-Urey Experiments

Abstract: In 1953, Stanley Miller reported the production of biomolecules from simple gaseous starting materials, using an apparatus constructed to simulate the primordial Earth's atmosphere-ocean system. Miller introduced 200 ml of water, 100 mmHg of H 2 , 200 mmHg of CH 4 , and 200 mmHg of NH 3 into the apparatus, then subjected this mixture, under reflux, to an electric discharge for a week, while the water was simultaneously heated. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide the reader with a general experimental … Show more

“…For contamination control, we are currently working on the design of an extraction cell that can be heated to 500°C in the presence of oxygen for several hours prior to installation in the extractor in order to further reduce the amino acid background (Parker et al, 2014). Hence, we engineered the current system to be compatible with future higher TRL advancement activities for space applications.…”

“…After stopping the reaction, samples were collected and stored frozen until analysis. Full details regarding gas introduction into the 3 L reaction flask, execution of a Miller‐type spark discharge experiment, and collection of samples at the completion of the experiment are based on the protocol outlined in the literature …”

“…The environment of present‐day Earth bears little resemblance to what it was like 3.8–4.2 billion years ago, the point in Earth's history when life is thought to have first arisen . Among numerous differences, the early Earth environment has been speculated to have been highly reducing, with similarities to Saturn's moon Titan, or to be at least sufficiently reducing to allow for robust redox chemistry to take place . In either case, the majority of organisms living on the modern Earth would have found the prebiotic environment to be poisonous, having evolved along with the changing environment of the Earth .…”
