Condoms: Past, present, and future

Abstract: Though many methods of prevention of STI/HIV are available, condoms remain of utmost importance. They have gone a long way from the oiled silk paper used by the Chinese and the hard sheaths made of tortoise- shell used by the Japanese to the latex condoms of today. The breakthrough came when the rubber vulcanization process was invented by Charles Goodyear and eventually the first rubber condom was made. The condom offers maximum protection( more than 90%) against HIV, Hepatitis B virus and N.Gonorrhoea. They … Show more

“…Top global condom vendors are, for example, Church & Dwight, Ansell, and Reckitt Benckiser (Research and Markets 2017). They are mainly made from natural rubber while other materials are lamb skins or synthetic rubber, such as polyisoprene or polyurethane (Marfatia et al 2015).…”

“…In fact, skin contact is one of the most relevant exposure routes to these materials, considering both an occupational scenario and specific ones related to skin applications of GBMs [ 8 , 9 ]. The latter consists of GBM-enriched devices used as biosensors, wearable soft bioelectronics and novel touchscreens, but can be represented also by GBM-enriched novel textiles, seat coatings and even new-generation condoms, among others [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ]. In this regard, we already characterized the in vitro toxic effects induced by short (24 h) and long (72 h) exposures to GBMs on skin HaCaT keratinocytes, a spontaneously immortalized non-tumor cell line that, resembling the functional properties of undifferentiated keratinocytes, is widely used as a screening tool to assess the mechanism of cutaneous toxicity [ 23 ].…”

“…In this study, people with multiple sexual partners were more likely to use dating apps. However, the effective use of barrier protection greatly diminishes the likelihood of STI contraction, with the male condom offering 90% protection against gonorrhea [22]. Those who perceived the risk of sex with no form of contraception to be very high were 2.5 times more likely to use dating apps and those using condoms were almost twice as likely to use dating apps, potentially signaling that dating app users are aware of the risks involved.…”
