CONDITIONS FOR HOLDING AND PROPAGATING CRAWFISH BROOD STOCK (Procambarus clarkii)

Abstract

Commercial producers of the red swamp crawfish (Procambarus clarkii) require a source of stock other than from the wild in order to supplement natural pond production, extend the growing season, and improve genetic characteristics. Thus, consideration is given to systems for holding and propagating brood stock. Physical and chemical conditions of importance for holding environments include size and shape of container, water depth, surface area, shelters, water hardness, and dissolved oxygen content. Biological influences of importance include density, cannibalism, predation, parasitism, and nutrition. Methods for spawning, hatching, and rearing of young are described.
