Condition assessment of XLPE insulated cables based on polarization/depolarization current method

Abstract: The water tree is one of the key factors leading to the insulation property deterioration in cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables. An accelerated ageing experiment has been performed to produce water trees with the purpose of ageing the full-size XLPE cable under the high-frequency electric field. Based on Polarization and Depolarization Current (PDC) method, the diagnostic tests are employed to evaluate the ageing extent of the cable subjected to water tree at different ageing time. Results show that the a… Show more

“…1) Data-driven PHM solutions: Many data sources associated with power cables have been focused on diagnostic tests such as elongation at break [3], partial discharge [4], timereflectometry [5], insulation resistance [6] and polarization currents [7]. However, the limited availability of diagnostic tests has constrained the adoption of PHM strategies for cables.…”

“…The ageing condition of the power cables is always of concern to power industries [1]. If the assessment of the cable ageing conditions can be implemented nonintrusively, the outage caused by regular maintenance and even cable failure will be reduced greatly [2]- [3].…”

“…By equivalent the dielectric to the extended Debye model, the model parameters are solved according to the measured current results. Then the relationship between the model parameters and aging state is analyzed to judge the aging degree of insulation [9][10][11][12][13][14]. Therefore, it is very important to obtain accurate polarization and depolarization currents for dielectric properties and aging state analysis.…”
