ConcurTaskTrees: A Diagrammatic Notation for Specifying Task Models

Abstract: In this paper we discuss a notation to describe task models, which can specify a wide range of temporal relationships among ta~ks. It is a compact and graphical notation, immediate both to use and understand. Its logical structure and the related automatic tool make it suitable for designing even large sized applications.KEYWORDS Task models, formal notations, model-based user interface design, tools for design.

“…For that purpose, Human-centered Assessment and Modeling to Support Task Engineering for Resilient Systems (HAMSTERS) [12] is a notation inspired by other existing ones for Task Modeling, especially CTT [13], and has been designed to remain compatible with it (from the point of view of people building the models) as models are hierarchical and are graphically represented featuring operators between the tasks. However, HAMSTERS includes extensions such as pre-conditions associated with task executions, data flow across Task Models, and more detailed interactive tasks.…”

“…A common basis to start with user interface specification is a task model. Concur Task Trees (CTT) [11] provides a notation for task models that can be used to derive user interfaces in subsequent steps. The User Interface eXtensible Markup Language (UsiXML) [15] describes a modeling and transformation approach from abstract to concrete user interfaces based on the Cameleon reference framework [1].…”

“…This approach uses the ConcurTaskTrees (CCT) technique (Paterno et al, 1997) to analyse and structure pedagogical content about the procedures within a particular task domain. The method is applied to the design of a serious game for training nurses in emergency medical procedures.…”
