Concurrent measurement of microbiome and allergens in the air of bedrooms of allergy disease patients in the Chicago area

Abstract: The particulate and biological components of indoor air have a substantial impact on human health, especially immune respiratory conditions such as asthma. To better explore the relationship between allergens, the microbial community, and the indoor living environment, we sampled the bedrooms of 65 homes in the Chicago area using 23the patient-friendly Inspirotec electrokinetic air sampling device, which collects airborne particles for characterization of both allergens and microbial DNA. The sampling device c… Show more

“…Briefly, we identified Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria as the most abundant bacterial phyla in agreement with recently published data. 51,52 Within these phyla, Pseudomonas and Sphingomonas were significantly enriched in the EDCs of patients with T2high SA. Regarding the mycobiome, Aspergillus versicolor FIG 2.…”

“…and C sphaerospermum have been identified as indoor species correlated to asthma. 43,44,51 Using NGS, Dannemiller et al identified numerous fungi that were significantly associated with SA. 44 Our results confirmed that several Cryptococcus species and E nigrum were associated with SA and that the genus Epicoccum was significantly enriched in the indoor mycobiome of patients with T2-high SA.…”

“…Air samples were collected using AirAnswers (Inspirotec) air samplers, 18 which collect particles by electrostatic precipitation. Electrostatic precipitation has been used in the collection of a variety of airborne particulates, 19 , 20 including viruses. 21 Surface samples were collected on doors leading into each of the air sampling spaces.…”

“…In one of the few studies that examined the levels of indoor microbiota and airborne allergens, Richardson et al. found that homes occupied by dogs had significantly higher bacterial alpha diversity while cats did not have any impact on microbial diversity 33 . Another study also suggested that the levels of airborne endotoxin were higher in homes with dogs than with cats 34 .…”
