Concomitant cryoballoon ablation and percutaneous closure of left atrial appendage in patients with atrial fibrillation

Abstract: Combined CB ablation and LAA closure using different devices appears to be feasible in patients with non-valvular AF associated with high risk of stroke or contraindication to antithrombotic treatment.

“…The 5‐year outcomes of combination therapy (LAAC with the Watchman device and CA for AF) also indicated the long‐term efficacy and safety . Concomitant cryoballoon ablation and LAAC devices were also demonstrated to be efficacious . In the present study, CA combined with LAAC as a hybrid procedure was technically feasible without significant risk of major complications.…”

“…These indications derive from observational or registry studies made comparing devices with the use of warfarin. Fur the future, the indication for LAAO in association with the AF ablation procedure AF 83–85 and MitraClip implantation, and the data obtained from comparison with the NOACs, remain to be assessed.…”

“…There are 4 recent studies involving combined procedures for AF catheter ablation and WATCHMAN LAA occlusion. One study 3 required 2 months of oral anticoagulation, while the other 3 studies4, 5, 6 required 3 months of oral anticoagulation before transition to dual antiplatelet therapy. There was only 1 ischemic event in all these studies.…”

“…Recently, some centers have begun to perform concomitant catheter ablation and WATCHMAN LAA occlusion 3, 4, 5, 6. This strategy has the benefit of providing treatment for symptomatic AF as well as stroke prevention without the need for long-term anticoagulation.…”
