Conclusion

Abstract: Like any other design process, the design of haptic systems is largely influenced by the optimization of a technical system, which is based on the consideration of a large number of decisions about individual components that usually influence each other.

“…We have discussed the reasons for this failure and some indications of discrimination learning. Haptic perception has always been an important topic in humans, for example, in the study of virtual reality (Kern et al, 2023;Tanaka & Kubota, 2022;Tanaka et al, 2023), but in comparative studies with nonhuman primates, it has been on the decline since the cross-modal perception studies of the 1960s to 1970s, with a few exceptions in neurophysiological studies. Nevertheless, we believe that the use of advanced technology, as demonstrated in this study, can pave the way for new research avenues in the field of tactile perception and cognition from a comparative cognitive perspective.…”

“…In recent years, haptic perception has been actively studied in areas such as virtual reality, and devices for force feedback have been intensively developed (Burdea et al, 1996) and are being put into practical use (e.g., Kern et al, 2023).…”

“…Haptic interfaces refers to haptic devices, consisting of manipulator with sensors, actuators, or both, and the software-based computer control mechanisms. Typically, optimizing for one of the features comes at the expense of other features [12], [13]. Take, for example, the multiple degrees of freedom (DoF) feedback, which is the number of independent dimensions for controlling haptic feedback.…”

“…Currently, there are design workflows for general origami engineering applications [10] and for traditional haptic interfaces [13]. However, there are no design workflows for origami-inspired haptic interfaces, as they involve diverse sensing and actuation mechanisms [15].…”
